What is a Giclée print?

"Giclée" (zhee-klay), a word derived from a French verb which means "to spray", is the term used to describe fine art large format digital prints which are captured by a high resolution digital scan or photo and printed on fine art paper, canvas or photo-base paper.

Our prints, produced by Brilliant Studio, are created using pigmented ink from an 8-color Epson digital press.  They are printed on a high quality, acid free German etching paper manufactured by the company Hahnemule. The combination of this paper and the pigmented inks has an archival value of over 150 years. Longevity as well as the rich and highly accurate color reproduction give these giclées their value and differentiate them from lithographs.

What does limited edition mean?

This means that there will be only a certain number of prints of this image created.  Period.  The number of each edition is the choice of the artist.  The prints are numbered by hand, records are kept of all sales and when the edition is sold out the image is retired.

If you did not purchase your print through AdrianMartinezPrints.com or an authorized vendor and are in doubt about authenticity, please call 610 873-1760 or email info@adrianmartinezprints.com

How long will my giclée print last?

The images have been printed on Hahnemule German Etching Paper with pigmented ink. Hahnemule is a 400 year old mill located in the south of Germany, and they have been manufacturing this particular paper since the mill first started making papers for printmaking. The paper has a weight of 300gsm, and in combination with the eight color inks used has the highest archival value for the giclée process. Under proper viewing conditions this paper/ink combination has been tested for longevity in excess of 150 years.  Since the perfect viewing conditions probably do not exist in your home however, a few things will help to ensure the life span of your print.  Be sure to frame the print using museum quality acid-free mattes and backing boards, keep it away from extreme humidity and find a wall in your home that does not get direct sunlight.

How will my print be shipped to me?

The prints are shipped in a heavy cardboard mailing tube with a 5 inch diameter. Do not leave the print in the tube for an extended period of time. If the print is not ready to be framed, please unroll it, lay it flat with a sheet of paper or cardboard on top of the image and put it in a safe place until you are ready to have it matted and framed.

What is the best method for matting and framing?

Your choice of matte color, frame and type of glass depend on your personal taste, but please make sure you use museum quality acid-free matte board and backing to preserve your print.  A cheap matte board will destroy your print over time.

Why should I buy an Adrian Martinez print?

You should buy a print in the same spirit that you would purchase an original.  Because the image speaks to you and living with it would add to the quality of your life.  Of course, if it matches the colors in your dining room or that kicky new rug you just spent and arm and a leg on, that is an added bonus.

Why isn't my favorite painting available as a print?

It might be available in the future, but for now only a few paintings by Adrian Martinez will be available as giclée prints. The location of the original work and the production costs of making a giclée are factors in deciding which paintings become prints.
